Body Culture
Over 1.1 million people in the UK are directly affected by eating disorders – 90 percent of them women and girls. With the increasing use of body surveillance in schools and the government's focus on the obesity epidemic a simplistic notion of the 'healthy' body has been re-enforced. In reality issues of body weight, size and shape and our perception of our own and others' bodies are becoming ever more complex. This work was created in response to an invitation to artists from Dr Emma Rich, based at Bath University, to interpret her research on young people and the body. It was shown as part of a group exhibition, Body Culture, held at BRSLI (Bath Royal Scientific and Literary Institute).
